Announcement
from Let's Make Waves: Thirteen Pools Saved
by the Toronto District School Board and the
Province of Ontario.
The
Keele Pool is saved! The community
will be swimming there for years to come.
Let’s
Make Waves is pleased to congratulate the
TDSB. Last night the Trustees voted to
provide committed support for the first 13
of the 39 city pools at risk. Trustees
also voted to sit at the table with the
Aquatics Working Group (AWG) to find a
long-term sustainable funding and management
solution for all the pools. The AWG
work will continue until the next board
meeting scheduled at the end of June.
At
that time, the Trustees will make a decision
on the remaining twenty-six pools.
Let’s
Make Waves would like to thank the Province
for stepping in, providing the capital
funding necessary to bring the city pools to
a state of good repair.
We
applaud our leaders for recognizing vision
and commitment.
We
would also like to thank David Crombie and
Karen Pitre for creating the AWG, driving
the direction, working the rooms and
providing such a strong, well researched and
valuable way forward.
The
citizens of Toronto thank you.
We
now look to the City of Toronto, encouraging
all Councillors and the Mayor to engage with
the Province, TDSB and aquatic organizations
in the AWG forum.
Only
through that forum, can our three levels of
government and citizen stakeholders
effectively participate in partnership to
resolve the operational cost question for
the remaining pools which the Provincial
offer is conditional.
